To Volley or Folly, that is the Question

"To be, nor not to be; that is the question; Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to..." O.K., should we venture to the net or be satisfied with our holding pattern at the baseline? It's a question many ask - especially if you're comfortable at the baseline, often forcing your opponents into coughing up short balls (anything bouncing at or before the service line).

Even if you're not that confident at your net game, moving in on short balls will earn you lots of volleys. With practice and a little patience, your volley is sure to improve.

Remember, what you do with that short ball always determines what type of volley you'll have to contend with. After hitting a short ball, try not to back up. Such a move often puts us in a compromising position for our next shot – no man's land.

We don't always like to gamble with our tennis game. When we do, our scores usually tell the tale. Sometimes risking a little, however, can open up a whole new dimension to your game. So when the opportunity comes knocking, be sure to answer the door – and go for your volley.
